Zero Deforestation Agreements

In a tweet on Wednesday, Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar, who attended COP26, said: „Forcing Indonesia to stop deforestation in 2030 is clearly inappropriate and unfair.“ Their position was supported by Deputy Foreign Minister Mahendra Siregar, who said in a statement: „The statement made does not refer at all to `ending deforestation by 2030.`“ Compliance with Zero Deforestation Agreements in Colombia: Obstacles and Opportunities A recent UN report found that deforestation rates in areas occupied by indigenous groups are up to 50% lower, noting that one of the best ways to solve the problem is to recognize their rights. Zero deforestation commitments are promises to end deforestation in a supply chain. „The study not only provides insight into progress and obstacles, but also presents a roadmap for companies that are signatories to the agreements to find a way to achieve net zero deforestation goals both individually and collectively through clusters or unions,“ said Javier Ortiz, coordinator of the Alliance for Tropical Forests in Colombia. While zero deforestation agreements are an important starting point for eradicating deforestation in value chains, signatory companies need increased internal efforts to create the conditions, support and tools needed to accelerate the implementation of their commitments. An area of virgin rainforest the size of the Netherlands was cut or burned last year. The latest data paints a bleak picture of what was supposed to be an „important step“ in the fight against deforestation. Much of this will sound familiar to you, as a very similar deal was reached in 2014. At the time, 40 countries had signed the New York Declaration on Forests, which pledged to halve deforestation by 2020 and end it by 2030. It was largely unsuccessful, but supporters hope it will be different this time around. The agreement is important because deforestation after burning fossil fuels is one of the main drivers of climate change. But with the failure of previous international forest protection agreements firmly in mind, environmental organizations say the agreement lacks details. The commitment to achieve net-zero deforestation by 2030 in the beef, dairy, palm oil and cocoa value chains is ambitious but achievable, provided companies make sustained efforts and take coordinated action with other actors participating in the Tropical Forest Alliance. This study aims to identify and assess the needs and obstacles faced by companies that have signed Colombian zero deforestation agreements in order to meet the commitments made and identify ways to overcome these obstacles.

The Congo River maintains one of the oldest and densest rainforests in the world, home to some of Africa`s most famous animals, including gorillas, elephants and chimpanzees. But the region is also rich in oil, gold, diamonds and other precious minerals. Mining and hunting have fueled its rapid deforestation, which scientists say will completely disappear by 2100 at the current rate. Zero deforestation commitments are a type of voluntary sustainability initiative that companies take to signal their intention to reduce or eliminate deforestation related to the raw materials they produce, market and/or sell. Since each company sets its own zero deforestation engagement goals and implementation mechanisms, the content of the engagement varies widely. This creates challenges in assessing the implementation or effectiveness of commitments. Here, we develop criteria to assess the potential effectiveness of zero deforestation commitments in reducing deforestation within a corporate supply chain, regionally and globally. We apply these criteria to assess 52 zero deforestation commitments made by companies identified by Forest 500 as posing a high risk of deforestation. Although our evaluation shows that existing commitments converge with multiple efficiency criteria, they do not meet expectations on some important points.

First, they cover only a small portion of the global market for commodities prone to deforestation, which means that their global impact is likely to be small. .
